Childhood Memories

Pears always bring back fond childhood memories for me.  When we were growing up, my grandparents lived one street over from us and had a huge lot behind their home (across the street from us).  We loved running through the property turning cartwheels, climbing trees, and playing hide-n-seek.

They had lots of pear trees, kumquat trees, grape vines along with the most beautiful Hydrangea bushes and Gardenias.  Probably why I love Hydrangeas so much even though I can't seem to keep them alive to save my soul.  :)

I always pick up a few pears at the grocery store when they are in season.  It takes me back to a more carefree time in life.

Do you have any triggers that take you back to a time of fond memories?

Hope you have a great day!

Lantern Posts

Today's post is the most popular post I have written to date.  This post has had over 25,805 views since it first posted on June 3, 2014.  How crazy is that?  So I decided to repost it for those of you that may have missed it.

We have no lighting on the far side of the pool, near the tanning deck, so it is pretty dark at night.  I came up with the idea to hang up some really large lanterns on wooden posts and presented it to Mr. K.  He took the ball and ran with it.  He went to Home Depot and bought the posts, Quikrete and the copper solar powered post caps.  He was pretty excited about the solar caps.  :-)  Our son-in-law, Mr. B, was able to borrow a post hole digger so we didn't have to buy one.

Quikrete is really easy to work with…..just add water.  It's just like making mudpies.

Mr. K used a "fancy" method to keep the post level while the Quikrete was setting.  He nailed a paint stirrer to the top of the post and to the top of the fence.  Lucky for him, it held it just where he wanted.

A few more tools…..a level, a hammer and a little water.

No job is complete without an orange bucket from Home Depot.  Mr. K put the dirt from the hole into the bucket so it wouldn't make such a mess in the rocks.

Mr. K painted the posts "Rugged Brown" by Sherwin Williams.  I am so in love with this color!!!

We found the hooks at Hobby Lobby and decided they were a nice compliment to the candle holders we already owned.  My bad, I forgot to put candles in the holders before I snapped the photos.  We don't leave the candles in them all of the time because the hot sun melts them down.

We are very happy with the way it turned out.  I was looking for more light but I got far more than that.  Before the posts were put in the flower pots appeared as though they were floating without any boundaries.  Now the pots look grounded.

We are looking forward to using the lanterns this weekend.
Not a bad project for under $60.00.
